Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
