"When are you interviewing the band?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple high-profile admirers have publicly petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos often show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to make music."

"So all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the band will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
