There are "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Recently Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The White House declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders indicating Trump had pressured him to cede large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Yet, on Monday Trump supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of extensive requirements that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented discussions about the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently preceded rumors that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
