Arne Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it was understandable for questions to be raised about his future after a further convincing loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in 12 games, representing the team's worst run after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received significant support from the top,” Slot commented.
“It's important to change things and get a victory naturally but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me all the time each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “During our regular discussions I feel the belief. But I've not talked to them since this game so far so let’s see.”
Persistent Issues and Squad Reaction
Slot lamented known shortcomings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I play for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a spell such as this with performances this poor.”
He stated, “But we still have that badge on our shirts. And until that badge is gone, we will always fight.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to the top, prove again what this club is about and why it's known as the top club in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
