US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.
